Biography

I have until recently spent much of my time teaching,initially in schools, and later working as a Senior Lecturer in Art and Design here in Cumbria, but have now given up teaching in favour of painting.
I have a B.A.(Hons) from Chelsea School of Art circa 1984, and since graduating have worked in illustration, from corporate work to book illustration (once reaching the dizzy heights of doing a job for DC comics in New York!).

As a painter I have undertaken various commissions from portraiture to publishing, as well as having pieces selected for The Lakes Artists and Cumbrian Open exhibitions.
In addition to my private and exhibition sales, I have also this year sold my first piece to a Gallery in The United States.

About Me

Much of my painting is concerned with the depiction of the effect of light on my chosen subjects, along with the physical quality of the paint itself.
I particularly like to explore the the nature of colours within the contrasting shadow shapes created by certain qualities of light at different times of day and in different locations.

I like 'paintings' that look like just that, and not technical reproductions of reality, and I strive to constantly rethink my approach in order to keep my work fresh and in a state of flux.
I generally use Alkyd oil paints as they have a faster curing time than traditional oils and so enable me to provide clients with completed commissions more quickly. As well as technical stability, they also have beautifully rich jewel like properties in their colour.

All my paintings are supplied varnished and require no further treatment.
